Vice President meets with EC regarding holding election early

The government has met with the Elections Commission (EC), to assure full assistance in the efforts to hold the election early.

Vice President Mohamed Waheed Deen told Sun Online after the meeting that the discussion was focused on finding out what the government can do for EC, to prevent the legal difficulties that will be faced if a president is not elected by 11 November.

“I came here to discuss what we can do for EC, that is, if they are facing difficulties due to lack of space, we can suggest to vacate some government institution buildings and allow EC to use them,” he said.

Deen said that EC was very positive during today’s discussion, and that they will inform the government what they need shortly.

He said that it would not be easy to hold the election on 2 November, but it might be possible to hold it on 5 November.

The three presidential candidates also met with EC yesterday, and proposed to hold the first round of the election on 2 November. EC, however, said that this is not possible.
