President welcomes agreement between candidates

President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has welcomed the meeting between the presidential candidates on Sunday.

In a statement issued today, President Waheed expressed delight in the three candidates having reached an agreement to propose to hold the election on 2 November.

He said the meeting has given hope to the people that their leaders put the nation before their personal political ambitions.

“I hope that the Elections Commission will now do all it can to run a credible election on these dates. If successfully done, the nation will not have to face a constitutional crisis,” President’s statement read.

The candidates agreed to propose for the election to be held 2 November, and the second round on 9 November. The Elections Commission however has rejected the dates in a meeting with the candidates today.
