Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has said Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate, former president Mohamed Nasheed’s statements against PPM president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom are baseless allegation that stems from fear that MDP will lose the presidential election.

PPM released a statement today condemning Nasheed’s allegations in Alimas Carnival on Tuesday night, and accusing Nasheed of making false claims against former president Maumoon.

Nasheed said during a MDP event on Tuesday night that Maumoon was manipulating President Waheed and the Supreme Court to obstruct the election and called on the former president to step aside and allow the election to proceed.

“A child would understand that there is no basis to such claims by former president Nasheed. His words came from anger and despair over the certainty that MDP cannot achieve a desired goal in the 9 November presidential election,” the PPM statement read.

PPM also accused MDP of rigging the September election and said that the Supreme Court guideline ensures that such tricks cannot be repeated.

November will be the last days of former president Nasheed’s political career, with the days that follow will bringing prosperity and development to the Maldives, PPM said.
