The coalition of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) has said that the Elections Commission (EC) is not following the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court.
Vice President of MDA, Kudahuvadhoo MP Ahmed Amir said this at a press conference held by the coalition today.
“The Supreme Court has issued a guideline. We can’t do anything in violation of this guideline. But the Elections Commission is not following the guideline,” he said.
Criticising the EC, Amir said that it is unlikely that the EC can organise an election by Saturday.
He said that the serial number was not stated on some slips issued by the EC to confirm that they received complaints filed by the PPM-MDA coalition.
Amir showed these slips to reporters at the press conference.
He further said that some people who submitted re-registration forms have been registered at a location different from the one they indicated on the forms.
He highlighted that there are problems with the voters’ list similar to the problems with the voters’ list used in the previous round, including the same person’s name being included in the list twice under two different addresses. He showed documents related to this to reporters.
Amir said that the extension of the deadline until 6:00 p.m. tomorrow still does not allow sufficient time to file complaints.
Spokesperson of PPM presidential candidate Abdulla Yameen, Ibrahim Muaz Ali said that some local organisations are not monitoring and overseeing the current activities of the EC.
