Australia has said that it is important that a peaceful transition to a new president is facilitated in the Maldives by 11 November.
In a Press Release issued by the Australian High Commission in Colombo, Sri Lanka, the Australian government acknowledged the commitment by the Maldivian government to hold a fresh first round of presidential elections on 19 October.
The statement reads: “It is important that the elections are held in a free, fair and inclusive manner and facilitate a peaceful transition to a new President by 11 November, as required under the Constitution of Maldives.
“We encourage Maldives voters to take part in the rescheduled process and note preparations being undertaken by the Elections Commission to facilitate voter participation.”
