Adhaalath Party supports case seeking to bar Nasheed from election

Adhaalath Party has declared support for the case filed in Supreme Court by Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) council member, lawyer Mohamed Waheed Ibrahim seeking to bar the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) presidential candidate, former president Mohamed Nasheed from the presidential election.

In a statement released today, the religiously conservative Adhaalath Party stated that it is past due to take action against Nasheed for his unlawful deeds, and that lawyer Mohamed Waheed’s initiative to seek justice is a “national and religious duty.”

“Mohamed Nasheed had broken his presidential oath, and [acted against] the constitution on numerous occasions during his presidency. He worked “outside the chart,” rather than according to the constitution. He waged a constant war against the courts in the name of reforming the judiciary, because he could not have his way in the courts. He did not hesitate to kidnap a sitting judge.”

“It is unlikely for other countries around the world to allow a person, who has acted grossly against the laws such as Nasheed, to be listed on their ballot paper,” the Adhaalath Party statement read.

President Dr Mohamed Waheed has released a statement on Thursday condemning efforts to stop Nasheed from running for office. In his statement, the President said that he believes this is not the time to engage in efforts to obstruct or bar candidates from going through the electoral process.

Meanwhile, PPM has also express discontent over lawyer Waheed’s move and exempted themselves from the case by saying that lawyer Waheed filed the case in his personal capacity.
