EC to place 476 ballot boxes in fresh October election

Elections Commission has announced that 476 ballot boxes will be placed across the country and abroad, for the fresh presidential election to be held on 19th October.

The commission placed 470 ballot boxes in the 7th September elections. The Supreme Court has since annulled the results of the election and declared the election invalid.

Speaking to Sun, Secretary General of the Elections Commission Asim Abdul Sattar said that additional 6 ballot boxes will be placed for voters registered under the Male’ Dhaftharu, the capital’s general registry.

A total of 106 ballot boxes will be place in Male’, which includes 51 boxes for the residents of Male’, along with 55 boxes for the island residents living in the capital, EC said.

Elections Commission revealed that 6 ballot boxes will be placed in commercial islands Thilafushi, Felivaru, Kooddoo, Seenu Gan, and Hulhule’, another 5 boxes in prisons, 42 boxes in resort islands, and 7 ballot boxes overseas.

Overseas cities designated to collect the presidential polls include Trivandrum and Delhi, India, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Colombo, Sri Lanka, Singapore and London, UK. Two ballot boxes will be placed in Colombo, EC said.

President of the Elections Commission Fuad Thaufeeq has said that ballot boxes will be placed in designated overseas cities regardless of whether 50 voters register to vote in the city, a regulation employed by the commission during the September 7th election.
