Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday reiterated his calls on Maldivians to ensure a peaceful, inclusive and credible process for the presidential elections which will be held anew on 19th October.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Ban Ki-moon’s Spokesperson stated that the Secretary-General takes note of the Maldivian Supreme Court’s decision ordering fresh presidential elections to be held within a new time frame The Secretary-General also acknowledged the continuing efforts by the Maldives Elections Commission.
Expressing concern over the Supreme Court injunction to delay the second round of the presidential election, the UN published a statement on 24th September, noting that the first round on of the election had been widely recognized as a success by international and domestic election observers and stating that the Maldivian people should have the opportunity, without undue delay, to exercise their vote.
