Fire burns down house in Velidhoo

A fire broke out in a house in Noonu Velidhoo early Wednesday morning, causing heavy damage.

A resident from the house named Gulshankinara, Ibrahim Adam said that the fire, which occurred around 3:00 a.m., was deliberate.

“There was nobody inside the house when it was set on fire. I was also with some people having a cup of coffee when it happened. I got a call and went, the house was on fire and burning,” Ibrahim Adam said.

Ibrahim Adam suspects the fire was first set to his room. The damage has left the house useless.

“My mother, siblings, and I live here. They are currently in Male’. Nothing could be saved, the house has been burned completely,” he said.

Ibrahim Adam was a member of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) before recently moving to the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA). He suspects the attack to be deliberate and politically motivated, Ibrahim Adam said.

“I am quite certain that this was deliberate. I have received threats. Police are now investigating,” Ibrahim said.
