Presidential candidate for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), former president Mohamed Nasheed has said that he is certain that Jumhoory Party (JP) candidate Gasim Ibrahim will help him win the second round of the presidential election.
Nasheed made his statement during the inauguration of MDP’s “Sports Post” in Maafannu. He also reiterated his confidence in winning the election.
“Our political rivals believe that we don’t just work for our interests. I believe that Jumhoory Party leader Gasim Ibrahim will also help us, and he too will be one of the reasons that we will in the election,” Nasheed said.
He said that there is a general consensus within the country, including amongst members of his the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), that MDP will win the election.
He said that PPM tried to gather a strong coalition to meet MDP in the second round but failed, and said that PPM will not be able to rally all political parties against MDP.
Nasheed directed a strong message to the religiously conservative Adhaalath Party last night.
“I would like to tell Adhaalath Party to accept defeat, to make the next month a month of peace. I would like to tell the sheikhs, please don’t try to create unrest in the country. We will not talk about you in the month ahead. Likewise, please refrain from making statements that would create chaos in the country,” Nasheed said.
