MDP to request intervention in JP's election case

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to request intervention in the case filed to High Court by Jumhooree Party (JP).

Spokesperson of MDP Imthiyaz Fahmy told Sun Online in an interview today that MDP decided request intervention in this case because MDP also contested in the presidential election held on Saturday.

“Jumhooree Party has filed a case to High Court regarding the presidential election held on Saturday. We at MDP have decided to request intervention in the case filed to High Court by JP,” he said.

He said that MDP has vested interest in the case, as MDP’s presidential candidate Mohamed Nasheed beat the other candidates by a strong margin in the first round of the presidential election.

Member of MDP’s legal team Hassan Latheef highlighted that media reports have stated that JP had requested a recount, and that the truth behind this matter can only be revealed by requesting intervention.

Hassan Latheef also said that MDP has vested interest in the case, as Nasheed achieved great success in the first round of the election.
