Commissioner of Police Abdulla Riyaz has said that police officers will be stationed in every island in the Maldives by nightfall on Thursday, as part of their operation for the Saturday presidential polls.

Speaking at a press conference in Iskandar Koshi today, Police Commissioner Riyaz announced that the police are fully prepared for the elections.

“In accordance to our plan, police will be stationed in all inhabited islands in the Maldives by 18:00 hours today, if weather permits,” the Police Commissioner said.

He said that police officers stationed in islands will receive support from atoll coordination centres and also from the Maldives National Defence Force (military), if the need arise.

Police Commissioner said that the dispatched officers will do whatever is necessary to maintain the peace, and that they will have access to all the necessary resources.

“We are prepared to carry out all responsibilities required from the police,” Abdulla Riyaz said.

He also noted that there were considerable few incidents during the campaigning this year and that the police have held discussions with political parties to identify their concerns for the September 7th elections.
