Police Integrity Commission (PIC), the state’s independent police oversight body has stated that the Commissioner of Police Abdulla Riyaz was appointed according to the law.
The legality of the appointment of Abdulla Riyaz was hotly debated following the controversial change of power in February 2012. PIC said that the matter was not officially filed with the Commission, but said that they have collected documents to determine if the matter should be officially investigated.
Police Integrity Commission stated that their review of the documents prove that the Commissioner of Police, Abdulla Riyaz was appointed according to the law, under Article 52 (a) and Article 52 (b) of the Police Act.
Article 52 (a) of the Police Act states that a person must be appointed to the rank of Commissioner of Police, within the high-ranking police officers, as the senior most officer responsible for the organization and management of regular affairs of the police in discharging its roles and functions.
Article 52 (b) states that the President shall appoint and dismiss the Commissioner of Police.
