Maumoon calls for peace during election

Former president and president of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has called for peace during the upcoming presidential election, to be held on Saturday the 7th of September.

Speaking at a party campaign event last night, Maumoon called to prioritize the country’s peace, before and after the polling day.

Noting how he had stepped down from office following the 2008 defeat, Maumoon asked for the relevant parties to follow his example and facilitate a smooth transition of power, regardless of the election result.

The former president told his supporters last night that he is confident that PPM will win the election through the first round of voting, but said that in the event that they go to a second round, they will not consider forming a coalition with a party that mocks Islam and Prophet Mohamed.

Maumoon iterated his praise for Yameen, stating that Yameen is the most capable candidate seen in the presidential race this year, and that this was quite evident from the presidential debate hosted by Television Maldives (TVM) last Sunday.

A number of sports personalities and local council members signed for PPM during last night’s event.
