PPM's Dr Jameel criticises Dr Hassan Saeed

Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, running mate of presidential candidate of the Progressive Party of Maldives, has criticised Dr Hassan Saeed, running mate of presidential candidate of Jumhooree Coalition, while speaking at a rally in Noonu Holhudhoo last night.

Dr Jameel referred to Gasim Ibrahim, presidential candidate of Jumhooree Coalition, and said that the issue of Gasim Ibrahim distributing laptops and TVs in the name of Villa Foundation during the election period should be investigated, before investigating any other issues related to corruption.

He said that the distribution of laptops, TVs and other items should be classed as bribery, and urged Dr Hassan Saeed to investigate these matters.

“Where’s the law on prohibition of corruption? Where’s the law of the Elections Commissions? The law clearly states that no one should engage in any activity that might influence the election. We are talking about someone who is contesting to become president. So I would like to say to Dr Hassan Saeed, before investigating anything else, try to correct the issues within your own ship before trying to do other things,” he said.

Dr Jameel said that Dr Hassan Saeed’s ship would be the first to sink during his own investigation of corruption cases.

“I want to say to Dr Hassan Saeed, if you’re investigating any corruption cases, the ship you’re on would be the first to sink,” he said.

Presidential candidate of PPM Abdullah Yameen said that the previous government hired several foreign audit firms and spent about $15 million to investigate a $800 million corruption allegation against him, but the result was ‘zero’.

“The previous government spent about $15 million of the people’s money to get back the alleged money. They got back zero. When I visit this island, I see that you need a proper waste management system, and the roads flood with the slightest bit of rain,” said Yameen.

He said that the investigation of the ‘fraud’ case against him was halted by the government of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

He referred to Dr Hassan Saeed’s remark that it was the current government that halted this investigation, and said that if this is true, the people who held the post of ‘Advisors’ at the time should he held responsible.
