Will figure out a way to give teachers' housing on permanant basis: Dr. Waheed

Presidential candidate for the Forward with the Nation Coalition Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that he will try to give the new housing flats for teachers to be awarded on a permanent basis.

Speaking at a campaign meeting with teachers working in the capital, Dr. Waheed said he will make an effort to grant the newly-built housing flats to teachers, as opposed to certain complaints that they were to be given to administrative staff working in the education sector.

“The new housing units [built for teachers] are for teachers alone. We’ve planned to do that, to give them to as many teacher and principles, to prioritize teachers over administrators,” President Waheed said.

However, he said that an arrangement has to be made for government to be able to withdraw such flats once the teachers move out of the profession, and that this is also an issue to be solved.

“It is an issue for teachers who have served for along periods of time. Because they might not have housing by the time they retire. So we’re still thinking about this, to find a way to make the flats permanent for those who have served for a specific period of time,” the President said.

President Waheed said that he was disappointed by number of teachers that attended last night's event.

“I really thought that when I requested for a meeting, more teachers would come. I am somewhat disappointed,” President Waheed said.

Last night's meeting was closed from the public and the media.
