MJA calls to expedite investigation of death threats against TVM presenter

Maldives Journalist Association (MJA) has called to expedite the investigation of death threats against TVM’s Deputy Editor Aishath Liza.

The TVM presenter started receiving death threats in relation to her show Siyaasath, a one-on-one question and answer show with the presidential candidates, aired during the past two weeks.

In a press statement by the association working for rights of journalists, MJA strongly condemned the threats against Liza and stated that the association does not believe the presenter’s words or actions during her shows, in any way, warrants the threats against her life.

“Those who issue such threats are ignorant of democratic values and freedom of the press and are deliberately trying to trample such freedoms. The Association calls on all parties to refrain from such actions in the future,” the MJA statement read.

The association also stated that programs such as TVM's Siyaasath show are important, as they allow the public to make an informed decision in the upcoming presidential election.

A police media official said today that they are investigating a report by TVM's parent company Maldives Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), who had stating that there have been death threats against their Deputy Editor.
