Harbour project will be continued as per court ruling: City Council

The Male’ City Council has said that the continuation of the project awarded to West Gate Private Limited regarding the development of Male’ southwest harbour depends on the ruling on the case filed in this regard to the Civil Court.

Male’ City Council member Ibrahim Sujau told Sun that the project is likely to be suspended until the court makes a decision on this case.

“It’s likely that the court ruling will be in favour of the government. So we’re waiting for the court ruling. This project has been criticised by the government and media ever since the agreement was signed,” he said.

Sujau said that the decision to proceed with this project was not made due to any problem, and that Housing Ministry’s permission was not required to make that decision.

“At the moment, the two parties are fighting. But the government does not want to proceed this way because the election is very near. No matter what, this is a very important project for Male’,” he said.

Deputy Attorney General Ahmed Usham said that the case has been filed to Civil Court again after it was dismissed on Sunday.

He said that the court has been requested to declare void the bidding opened for leasing land from the harbour area.

Usham said that the court has also been requested for an injunction to ensure that land is not leased to any group until the court makes a decision on this matter.

Male’ City Council has awarded the project to develop the southwest harbour in Male’ to West Gate Private Limited, for 25 years for a monthly rent of MVR 400,000.
