EC warns against overstepping campaign regulations

Elections Commission (EC) has issued a blunt warning to all political parties campaigning for the presidential elections to stay within campaigning regulations, or risk legal action by the Commission.

In a statement released today, the Commission stated that; “The Commission will take action against those who violate laws and regulations in their efforts to gather support for the candidates.”

EC stated that they continue to receive complaints of unlawful campaigning. Disturbances due to unreasonably loud campaigning is a persistent complaint, the Commission said.

In its statement, the Commission reminded the public that actions such as keeping television's volume turned unreasonably high are punishable offenses under the Maldives Anti-Social Behavior Act.

With about two weeks for the presidential elections, announced for the 7th of September, feverous campaigning is seen all across the country.
