Qatar Airways increases passenger baggage allowance

Qatar Airways has announced that the airline will increased baggage allowances with additional baggage weight allowed per person for passengers flying the airline’s routes worldwide, staring from 1 September 2013.

In a press statement released by the airline, Qatar Airways stated that the economy weight allowances will be increased from 23kg to 30kg while Business and First Class will be increased from 30kg to 40kg and 40kg to 50kg respectively.

However, the airline said the number of bags allowed will remain the same subject to the type of ticket purchased, and that the increased weight allowance does not apply to passangers travelling to points that are regulated by per-piece allowance.

Expressing hope for a positive outcome from this recent move, Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker said that the airline's revision of their standard baggage allowance come at a time when the airline’s destinations are increasing.

“The number of customers we see travelling for longer periods of time, whether for business or on holiday, reflects the necessity for increased baggage allowance no matter their destination,” Akbar Al Baker said.

Qatar Airways stated that those passengers who have travelled prior to 1st September will also be able to take advantage of the increased baggage allowance on their return trip, if returned after the 1st of September.

The airline also plans to publish new Excess Baggage rates in September, where passengers, according to the airline, will be able to purchase Excess Baggage at discounted rates of up to 20% on qatarairways.com.
