State has charged two Members of Parliament, Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir and Henveyru-South MP Hamid Abdul Gafoor with being in possession of alcohol and using cannabis, in connection to their arrest from Haa Dhaalu Hondaidhoo in November last year.
Media Official at the Prosecutor General’s Office told Sun today that MPs Hamid and Jabir have been indicted for the possession of alcohol and using cannabis.
The official said that Jadulla Jameel, 37 of Reef Side Seenu Hulhudhoo is also facing charges along with Hamdhan Zaki, son of former Special Envoy of the President Ibrahim Hussain Zaki.
The PG official said that Hamdhan Zaki has been charged with trafficking cannabis after 18 grams of cannabis was discovered from his persons.
Article 108 (c) of the Drugs Act, a person convicted using cannabis maybe sentenced to 15 years in prison, in addition to being subjected to a fine of between MVR 25,000 and MVR 500,000.
Article 106 (c) of the Drugs Act levies life-time prison sentence, in addition to a fine of between MVR 100,000 and MVR10 million for trafficking cannabis.
State has also charged MPs Hamid and Jabir for refusing to provide urine samples to the authorities.
The cannabis and alcohol charges were filed in court yesterday.
