House damaged in fire in Velidhoo

A house named Dhireyraha in Noonu Velidhoo has been severely damaged in a fire incident.

The police said that the incident was reported at 2:45 am last night, following which the Velidhoo Police Station officers went to the house and extinguished the fire with the cooperation of the people of the island.

The fire was put out at around 3:30 am and no one was hurt in the incident, said the police.

The police said that the fire affected a part of the house that had been built using corrugated iron and wood, as well as the kitchen, and the items in the kitchen were burned beyond use.

Vice President of Velidhoo Council Ahmed Saeed said that the fire broke out in the kitchen of an inhabited house.

“People started yelling ‘fire!’ when they saw smoke coming out. The police arrived after the people of the island controlled the fire using water buckets and hoses. The fire was completely extinguished at around 3:30 am by the police and the people. If there was even a slight delay in putting out the fire, the three houses nearby would have been affected,” he said.

There was a fire incident in a house in Velidhoo about a week ago as well, following which one person was arrested on suspicion of arson.
