Unrest breaks out in Feydhoo between supporters of MDP and Jumhooree Coalition

Unrest has broken out in the island of Feydhoo in Addu City between supporters of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Jumhooree Coalition.

The police said that the incident, which took place at a Jumhooree Coalition rally in Feydhoo, was reported at around 20:30 last night, following which the police made efforts to restore order in the area.

No one was arrested in relation to this incident, said the police.

President of Addu City Council, MDP’s Ahmed Adham said that Jumhooree Coalition had put up yellow banners and was carrying out anti-campaigns against MDP, by claiming that MDP is a party known for arson attacks.

He said that supporters of Jumhooree Coalition also caused damage to the property in an MDP campaign station (jagaha) that was opened recently near a Jumhooree Coalition campaign station, and this incident resulted in assault between the two groups.

Abdul Latheef Ali, a representative of Jumhooree Coalition, said that MDP supporters at the nearby MDP campaign station started playing loud music as soon as Jumhooree Coalition started their meeting in their campaign station.

He said that serious arguments took place between the two groups due to this, but there was no assault.

He also refuted MDP’s claims and said that Jumhooree Coalition neither put up anti-campaign banners against MDP, nor caused damage to property in the MDP campaign station.
