The police have said that despite the media reports indicating that there was an attempted attack on former President Mohamed Nasheed last night, the incident has not yet been reported to the police.
Some social media sites and some local TV channels reported last night that two people attempted to attack Nasheed after the inauguration of a campaign hall for Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). They also said that Nasheed was not hurt in the incident.
The police said that they are looking into the matter.
“No such incident has been reported to us, but since reports are being circulated on social media, we are looking into it,” said a police official.
Security is provided to Nasheed by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Special Protection Group (SPG).
MNDF’s Colonel Abdul Raheem said, “We have not received any information to indicate that there was an attempted attack directly on Nasheed, but they have said that an incident took place at that location.”
MDP has also not yet officially commented on the alleged attempted attack on Nasheed.
