Man arrested for Velidhoo arson

A man has been arrested for setting fire to a house in Noonu Velidhoo earlier this morning.

Police media official said that a 22-year-old man from the island has been arrested, under a court warrant, suspected of setting fire to Hiyaavahi house earlier this morning.

The official also said that the man has a criminal history of damaging property, assault and drugs.

Police are further investigating the case.

The fire broke out in Hiyaavahi house, located in the middle of the inhabited area in Noonu Velidhoo around 5 a.m. early this morning. The flames were extinguished around 8:30 a.m. with efforts from the police, locals and military officers.

Velidhoo island council said that the house has been left unoccupied for over a month and that nobody was hurt in the incident.
