A fire in a house in Noonu Velidhoo has left the it burnt to the ground, rendered unusable.
A well built house named Hiyaavahi located in the middle of the inhabited area, the house is believed to have caught fire around 5 a.m. early this morning. The flames were finally extinguished with efforts from the police and locals from the island, the island council said.
Nobody was hurt in the incident.
Velidhoo Council President Mohamed Adil told Sun today that the council was informed of the incident around 6:30 a.m. this morning and that by then, the fire was spreading rapidly.
“The house has been left unoccupied for about a month now. A family from this island used to live there. The owner lives in Male’, but some people from this island still cleans the house. We don’t know why this happened,” Adil said.
A police media official said the fire was extinguished around 8:20 a.m. along with efforts from the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), and locals from the island. They said that they are currently investigating the cause of the fire, and that they suspect that the fire was a deliberate act of arson. They are currently looking for the suspects, they said.
