A collecting vessel belonging to Horizon Fisheries Pvt. Ltd. carrying 17 tons of fish has run aground on a reef in Laamu atoll.
An official of Horizon Fisheries told Sun Online today that the incident took place last night at around 01:00, when the vessel’s anchor slipped and it ran aground on a reef near Laamu Hithadhoo.
He said that no one was hurt in the incident, but the fibre vessel suffered serious damage.
The official said that the vessel left Laamu Maandhoo to collect fish, and when it ran aground with 17 tons of fish, another vessel of Horizon Fisheries went to the area of the incident and has now taken the fish to Maandhoo.
The vessel of Horizon Fisheries, a subsidiary of Gasim Ibrahim’s Villa Company, ran aground during a storm last night during which winds picked up to 45 to 50 miles per hour.
The relevant weather department has warned against bad weather over the next few days, and issued a Yellow Alert.
