Islamic Ministry receives over MVR 2 million in Zakat money

Ministry of Islamic Affairs has said that they have received more than MVR 2 million as Zakat a-Fitr this year.

Permanent Secretary at the Islamic Ministry Mohamed Didi told Sun that although its difficult to say an exact number of people who have paid the charity, which is given to the poor at the end of the fasting in the month of Ramadan, he said that they have collected in excess to MVR 2 million so far during the holy month this year.

“It is difficult for us to say the exact number people who have paid the Fitr Zakat this year, but we’ve received over MVR 2 million, through the many avenues that were set up,” Didi said.

He said that they received a total of MVR 2.4 as Zakar al-Fitr last year and that the Ministry predicts to receive more this year.

Reflecting on the amount gained from Male’, the Permanent Secretary said that Islamic Centre has received MVR 46,000 so far and that they collected MVR 86,000 from Male’ last year.

He said that there are over 13,000 people registered as poor in the capital city.

The last day of collection for Zakat al-Fitr this year is tomorrow, Mohamed Didi said.
