Elections Commission rebuts Hussain Shareef

The claims by Minister of Human Resources, Youth and Sports, and Council Member of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Mohamed Hussain Shareef, suggesting that the Elections Commission had said that it is unlikely that solutions can be found to the problems associated with the voters’ registry, have been rebutted by the Elections Commission.

In a statement issued today, the Elections Commission expressed concern and sadness over the fact that Hussain Shareef spoke in a manner that could defame the commission, at the press conference held by PPM yesterday.

The commission said that the credibility of the elections held between 2008 and the present day have not been questioned by any local political party or any foreign group, thus, no political party would gain from trying to defame the Elections Commission.

The commission also strongly condemned the efforts to mislead the public by spreading untruths about the commission, with the presidential election imminent.

In the statement, the commission assured that it would remain undeterred in its efforts to ensure a fair election, which is free from any sort of influence, for the Maldivian people.
