Six arrested for obstructing JP team visiting Ukulhas

Six people have been arrested in Alifu Alifu Ukulhas this morning, on suspicion of obstructing a team of Jumhooree Party (JP) visiting the island.

Shaukath Ibrahim, president of Ukulhas Council, told Sun Online today that six people have been arrested following protests against a team representing Gasim Ibrahim that arrived in the island on 27 July, who allegedly tried to influence the upcoming presidential election by distributing money to the people of the island.

He said that council member Ali Waheed is among those who were arrested, and that the six people are now in Alifu Alifu Rasdhoo under police supervision.

“The police arrived in the island at 08:30, when most people were sleeping. The police did not consult the council prior to coming here. On previous occasions, they have always discussed the issues with the council before coming ashore on the island. This is a very cowardly act on the part of the police,” he said.

Shaukath said that even though protests were held against Gasim’s team by a group in the island, the group did not violate the law in any way.

“The police have said that it had been decided to arrest seven additional people under a court warrant,” he said.
