President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that nothing would make him happier than a peaceful, orderly election in September this year.
The president made this remark while speaking at a reception held on the occasion of Independence Day last night.
“As a candidate, I want to win the election. However the most important thing for my government is that the election follows democratic principles, and is one in which all citizens’ voices are heard. Nothing would make me happier,” said President Waheed.
The president said that most people present at the reception, which included local and foreign dignitaries and former senior officials of the government, would participate in the election in several ways.
“I know that most people present here would participate in the election in various ways. As we move closer to the election date, we need your ideas, that is, to exemplify to the world a democratic election in an Islamic country,” he said.
Last night’s function was held at the National Museum. The president also responded in his speech, to concerns raised by some groups regarding the displays at the museum being damaged as a result of the function.
He said that the National Museum was chosen as a venue for the function after making sure that no damage would be caused to the artefacts at the museum, and assured that the government would not carry out any activity that might harm the artefacts at the museum.
