Ibrahim Mohamed Solih praises Azima Shakoor

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu) has praised Attorney General (AG) Aishath Azima Shakoor while speaking at a meeting of the Parliament Government Oversight Committee today.

At the committee meeting held to make a decision on granting approval for the newly-appointed AG, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said that Azima Shakoor is an educated, capable person and he supports her inclusion in the cabinet; however, it was not possible to grant approval to include her in President Dr Mohamed Waheed’s government.

“President Waheed is not someone capable of being president, especially not an elected president. It’s not possible to support Azima being part of his cabinet,” he said.

Hinnavaru MP Ibrahim Mohamed Solih further said that MDP never accepted the present government, and that MDP would not grant approval for any minister in this government.

Speaking at the meeting, Committee Chairperson, Thoddoo MP Ali Waheed said that MDP would not grant approval even for the “mother” of MDP, Mariya Didi, if she decided to join President Waheed’s cabinet.

Azima Shakoor was reappointed as AG after the parliament rejected her as the Minister of Family, Gender and Human Rights.

Some members of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) also voted against the parliament motion to grant approval when Azima Shakoor was appointed as the Minister of Family, Gender and Human Rights.

Parliamentary Group Leader of PPM Abdullah Yameen said that Azima Shakoor was first appointed as AG following PPM’s recommendation, and the party would not support the decision to transfer her to another ministry without the party’s approval.
