Plots of land have been leased to the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to hold political activities until the end of the upcoming presidential election, the local council election and the parliamentary election.
Head of Maafushi Council Ali Nasheed told Sun Online tonight that two 2,000 sq ft plots in Maafushi had been leased to PPM and MDP at MVR 500 per month. He said that PPM and MDP were the only two parties that applied for land after the council made an announcement regarding leasing land to political parties.
“We made an announcement following requests from parties, and said that the council would lease land to parties to hold political activities. The council has decided, after discussion, to temporarily lease land to parties. We have leased plots to these two parties until the end of three elections,” he said.
Nasheed said that MDP had already established a station at the leased area and commenced political activities.
The Maafushi Council said that more parties are welcome to apply for land in Maafushi.
The council has decided to lease plots not exceeding 2,000 sq ft from the vacant lands in the island to parties for political activities.
