Police advice public to be mindful of robbers posing as policemen in Addu City

Police have advised the public to mindful of robbers posing as police officers, questioning and performing checks on random members of the public on the roads and robbing them of their money and jewelries in the process.

Maldives Police Service also said that these impostors ask to check people’s belongings and property. They advised to not allow them the opportunity.

Police noted that these robbers also try to intimidate the people they stop on the roads and that they also try to gain access to people’s homes and property.

Police said that their officers will have their police identification cards on their person’s at all times, regardless of where they operate in the country. They said that all policemen will carry their identification cards, even if they their duties require them to wear plain clothes.

They recommend the public to ask the police officers to present their identification cards.

They also called on the public to inform the police of any such incidents as soon as they happen, to aid in their efforts to track down these imposters posing and policemen in Addu City. Police assured that due protection will be provided to anyone who provides information.

Police also stated that these robberies are deliberate efforts to slander and defame the police at a time when the Maldives Police Service is gaining the trust of the public through special efforts to make Addu City a peaceful place. They assured the people of Addu City that such “uncivilized” tactics will not deter their commitment to make the city peaceful.
