High Court Chief Judge suspended indefinitely

Judicial Service Commission has indefinitely suspended Ahmed Shareef, the Chief Judge of High Court today.

Sun has come to know that the decision to suspend the chief judge was made upon a three member majority of the four members who sat at the JSC meeting today.

The suspension comes at a time when JSC is investigating complaints against the chief judge submitted to the commission about a year ago by a number of judges from the High Court. The JSC has also collected Judge Shareef’s statement regarding the matter.

High Court also cancelled the hearing today, for the case submitted by former president Mohamed Nasheed, contesting the legality of the Hulhumale' Court bench of judges constituted by the JSC to preside over the illegal detention of Criminal Court judge Abdulla Mohamed early last year.

Judge Ahmed Shareef was said to be a member of the Judicial Reform Commission attempted to be established by former President Mohamed Nasheed, the purpose of which was to undermine the decisions made by lower courts.

An official of JSC said that a press conference will be held in relation to this matter today.
