Thilafushi Corporation Limited (TCL) has said that the work to reclaim the lagoon on the south side of Male’, in order to establish a waste yard, is being delayed due to delays by the Ministry of Housing in emptying and handing the area over to TCL.
Managing Director of TCL Ilham Idhrees told Sun Online that the reclamation work will begin as soon as the area is handed over to TCL.
“The agreement states that the work should begin within one month from the day the area is handed over to us. We are prepared for that,” he said.
“We can’t order anyone to empty the area. That has to be done by the Housing Ministry.”
Ilham said that the funds necessary for this project will be provided by the company.
Thilafushi Corporation was commissioned to carry out the reclamation project to establish a waste yard on the south side of Male’ (stadium area) on 21 March 2013.
By the end of the project, workshops, garages and carpentry shops would have been transferred to the reclaimed area, resulting in a solution not just to the problem of waste management in Male’ but also to the problem of congestion.
The Housing Ministry has said that the new waste yard would also solve the problem of the stench of waste material currently affecting Vilingili Ferry Terminal, IGMH, Hiriya School, Thaajuddin School and Imaaduddin School.
