United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Oscar Fernandez-Taranco has stressed the importance of implementing the recommendations given by UN Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers Gabriela Knaul and the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI).
Fernandez-Taranco said this today while concluding his three-day visit to the Maldives.
He urged all groups to work towards making the upcoming election free and fair, and making it an election in which all candidates wishing to participate are able to do so.
During his visit, Fernandez-Taranco met with officials of the government, judiciary, Elections Commission, political parties and NGOs.
He also called for the immediate strengthening of the Maldives Police Service, the Police Integrity Commission, the Judiciary, the Judicial Services Commission, the Parliament, and the Human Rights Commission.
