We need leaders who produce results, not people who talk big: Dr Jameel

Running Mate of the Presidential Candidate of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has said that what the country needs today is not people who talk big, but leaders who produce results.

Dr Jameel said this at the function held to announce PPM’s running mate at Dharubaaruge last night.

He said that Yameen produces results, and the country needs a person such as Yameen as its president.

Dr Jameel said that Yameen has managed several government companies such as STO, STELCO and Island Aviation, and produced profits.

He said that Yameen is an intellectual person who increased employment opportunities while working in the government of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

Dr Jameel extensively praised Yameen and Gayoom at last night’s function, and also made several promises on behalf of PPM if the party comes to power.

He said that Yameen possesses the qualities to ensure social protection and increased employment opportunities in the Maldives.

He also criticised Presidential Candidate of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), former President Mohamed Nasheed.

He said that Nasheed’s government did not reimburse civil servants their salaries deducted since 2010 even after the courts ordered to do so.

He said that while Nasheed has said during his current campaign that he would reimburse civil servants their deducted salaries if he returns to presidency, it should be noted that President Dr Mohamed Waheed started repaying those salaries after he took office.

He said that a leader who works for the benefit of people should not have disregarded the court order to reimburse civil servants their deducted salaries.

Dr Jameel, who was part of former President Nasheed’s government and holds the post of cabinet minister in the current government, said that he realised from experience that only by joining PPM can he ensure development for the Maldives and preserve the Maldivian culture.

“I have been fortunate enough to have worked with three presidents. The most important thing I learned from that experience is that the only way to ensure development for the Maldives and preserve the Maldivian culture is by joining PPM,” he said.

At last night’s function, Dr Jameel was praised by President of PPM Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
