Few people may follow Umar if he is expelled: Dhunya

President of the Women’s Wing of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Dhunya Maumoon has said that any action taken against the party’s former Vice President, Umar Naseer by the Behavioural Committee could result in some of his supporters leaving the party.

Dhunya made this remark at a press conference held at PPM Office today.

“I don’t want to say a number; I would say a small number of people may go with him. Umar also has supporters,” she said.

Dhunya said that PPM will strictly follow its Basic Regulation and the decisions made by its regulatory bodies.

She urged members not to be dismayed by a few people leaving the party, and said that presently, the party’s leadership is made up of capable people.

She said that PPM’s Primary was a fair election, and that Umar earlier said that he would stand behind the person who wins the election, but later went back on his word and went on to carry out activities that resulted in conflict within the party - which shows that Umar is not someone who works for the benefit and progress of the party.

She said that she did not wish to comment further until the Behavioural Committee makes a decision on the matter.

Referring to the resignation of Gemanafushi MP Ilham Ahmed from the post of Vice President of PPM, Dhunya said that even though Ilham had resigned from the post, he is still a member of PPM.

Ilham himself has said that in spite of his resignation, he will remain as a member of PPM until the upcoming Presidential Election.
