Maafushi Prison staff and inmates screened for TB

Inmates and staff of Maafushi Prison have been screened for Tuberculosis after an inmate serving a sentence was tested positive for the disease.

Person in-charge of the Department of Penitentiary and Rehabilitation Services (DPRS) Minister of State for Home Affairs confirmed that the screening was conducted, but failed to mention whether any of the persons had tested positive for the disease.

Further information has been unavailable regarding the issue.

Ministry of Health recently stated that a strand of TB that does not respond to medication has been discovered in the Maldives, and that it poses a difficult new challenge to containing the disease.
