Minister of Islamic Affairs Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has said that MVR 23 million will be distributed to the poor from the Zakat Fund this year.
Shaheem said that the ministry had decided to distribute the money in the first week of Ramadan.
He said that MVR 5 million will be spent on encouraging the education of memorisation of Quran, and part of the fund will also be spent on developing religious education and discipline.
Donations will also be made to the Centre for Persons with Disabilities, Kudakudhinge Hiya and Arabiyya School, said Shaheem.
He further noted the Mosque Fund will be used to build mosques in Laamu Kunahandhoo and Thaa Gaadhiffushi, which is a great achievement for the Islamic Ministry.
He said that last year, MVR 42 million and MVR 20 million were received by the Zakat Fund and the Mosque Fund respectively.
