Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has said that they will take action against Umar Naseer today for failing to make a public apology.
The party had demanded Umar to make a public apology for holding a party event and allegedly making false accusations, soon after losing the party’s presidential primary. The party had declared that Umar's actions were against the party’s regulation.
The chairman of PPM’s behavioural committee and Maavashu MP Abdul Azeez Jamaal Aboobakuru said today that the action to take against Umar will be decided during a committee meeting scheduled for 4 pm today, and that the severity of the issue will be taken into account before making a decision.
“The committee will decide on the matter today, the action will be decided after taking the severity of the issue into account, the regulation states that an action may be taken in sequence [of the offence], or we can disregard the sequence altogether,” Abdul Azeez Jamaal Aboobakuru said.
According to the party regulation, Umar may face a number of penalties including; suspension from party activities, warnings for his actions, fines, removal from any party posts that he may hold, or be advised against repeating such an offence.
When demanded to apologize, Umar had said that he does not believe that he had made any statements which required a public apology.
Conversely, Umar had persistently stated that it is the people who rigged the presidential primary who owes the public an apology.
