IGMH resolves shortage of anaesthetists, now faces lack of paediatricians

Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has said that their recent problems regarding the lack of anaesthetists have now been resolved, but said they are now facing difficulties due to a lack of paediatricians.

IGMH encountered major difficulties due a shortage of anesthetists last month, which had forced the central state owned hospital to limit their surgeries to emergency cases alone.

Speaking on behalf of IGMH, Dr. Mohamed Habeeb told Sun Online today that the hospital had only two anaesthetist in the middle of last month, but said that they have now acquired two more doctors, which had allowed them to resume scheduled surgeries.

“Now we have a new anaesthetist, and a doctor who had come back after seeking treatment for a knee injury, and the two doctors we previously had,” Dr. Habeeb said.

Even though scheduled surgeries have now been resumed, surgeries have to be strictly regulated said Dr. Habeeb, and that the hospital has unable to attract good doctors.

The hospital now faces a lack in paediatricians, Dr. Habeeb noted, and said that they currently employee only two paediatricians and that this had forced them to limit their treatment to children who are currently admitted in the hospital.

Dr. Habeeb said that the hospital is making a continuous effort to seek new doctors, but said that the efforts have been largely futile.
