President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has inaugurated a new water desalination plant in Raa Dhuvaafaru this afternoon.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, President Waheed said that this modern desalination plant, equipped with latest technology, was the future of water processing in the Maldives. He said that more water plants would be established in other parts of the country in the future, based on the experiences of the Dhuvaafaru water desalination plant.
He said that the guarantee of a constant supply of fresh-water to about 4000 inhabitants of Dhuvaafaru is joyous milestone and should be celebrated. He thanked the parties that made the project possible, and noted that the project was concluded with a lot of support and dedication from a number of parties.
The President also noted that despite Maldives being a country blessed with a good amount of rainfall each year, the government has to spend a huge expense to supply drinking water to about 60 islands annually.
Dhuvaafaru MP Mohamed Zubair also participated in the event.
