No one can give a deadline to complete an investigation: Home Minister

Home Minister Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has said that no one can give a deadline to complete an investigation.

Dr Jameel said this while answering questions posed by reporters at a function held for police officers and their families at Iskandar Koshi last night, on the occasion of the anniversary of the police.

Dr Jameel said that only the police officers involved in an investigation would be informed of the evidence required for a case, and that the police officers would not hesitate in obtaining that evidence.

He said that investigations are never suspended and left behind halfway through, and that cases are forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s Office as soon as sufficient evidence is obtained.

Dr Jameel stressed the importance of filing cases to court soon after they are sent to the Prosecutor General’s Office after completion of investigations. He highlighted that in some countries, prosecutions commence within 24 hours of the completion of investigations, and said that the Maldives should also adopt this system.

Referring to the 80th anniversary of the police, Dr Jameel said that the police institution had made great progress and that it is an exemplary institution.

Dr Jameel’s remarks came following the deadline given to the police by Adhaalath Party to complete the investigation of the murder of Dr Afrasheem Ali, within three months.

President of Adhaalath Party, Imran, while speaking at a rally held by the National Movement last Wednesday night, called on the police and the government to complete the investigation of the murder of Dr Afrasheem Ali and take action against the perpetrators.

Meanwhile, murder charges have already been pressed against Hussain Humaam of H. Lobby and Ali Shaan of H. Hicoast for the murder of Dr Afrasheem Ali.

Commissioner of Police Abdullah Riyaz has said that the investigation of the people suspected of having been physically involved in the murder had been completed and filed for prosecution, and that the police are now working on identifying the party that provided the funds for killing Dr Afrasheem Ali.
