Parliament Public Accounts Committee has discussed to seek a credible international company to provide health insurance for two former presidents, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Mohamed Nasheed.
The parliamentary committee reflected on the statistics provided by the Finance Ministry, which stated that former President Maumoon had spent MVR 1.3 million on health care within the past 3 years, which include MVR 302,000 in 2010, MVR 713,000 in 2011, and MVR 298,000 up until April of 2012.
The committee discussions revealed that the statistics showed that former President Nasheed had not resolved to state funds for health care after leaving office.
Bileidhoo MP Ahmed Hamza said that obtaining a health insurance package from a credible intentional insurance company would lessen the burden of finances of the health of the two presidents on the State.
“I think that we should have good coverage in order to manage the state outflow. To take an expensive package and for Finance to manage it, if there is a deficiency,” MP Hamza said.
Fuvahmulah-south MP Sameer Mohamed and Hulhumeedhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb supported MP Hamza’s proposition. The committee agreed to seek and review some of the insurance packages from international insurance providers and to decide on the matter on a later date.
