Large number of undocumented workers handed over to Immigration

Police have handed over a large number of undocumented foreigners working in Male' to the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

Police Media Official Hassan Haneef said that a total of 57 foreign workers were collected from the market area during a join special operation conducted by the police and the Department of Immigration today. He said that the workers have now been handed over to the care of the Department of Immigration. He said that operation is planned to continue.

An official from the Department of Immigration said today that a number of undocumented foreign workers working in the local market and fish market areas were handed over to the department’s care today. He said that it is illegal for foreigners to actively sell vegetables in the local market area and that they will be handled as per due procedure.

There are a large number of undocumented workers working in local cafés and fishing boats in the Maldives. The latest statistics show that there are a total of 79,777 foreigner working in the country.
