Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) Leader Ahmed Thasmeen Ali has said that he is confident that their efforts towards the upcoming presidential election will be successful and that this year will see the establishment of a DRP government in the Maldives.
Speaking at a meeting held in DRP office last night, Thasmeen said that the party will never do anything that might hurt the people and that it will never stray from its codes and principles. He said that the signing of MP Kaanal Mohamed Nasheed to the party was a new source of inspiration to the efforts for the upcoming presidential election.
“I believe that we have to win this election in order to implement these principles, Mohamed Nasheed, commonly known as Kaanal, can play an important role. We believe that the he will sincerely participate in finding opportunities for our efforts to implement the principles we believe in, for the Maldives. God willing, our efforts will be successful, and a government that belongs to a party of the people will be established in 2013,” said Thasmeen.
Speaking at last night’s meeting, Thasmeen strongly criticized former President Nasheed’s administration saying that the people brought changes to the system in 2008 with high hopes, but said that even though former President Nasheed had won the presidential election om 2008, he had not sought implementation of the things the people had hoped.
“A whole new system was shaped in 2008. During the first election under this new system, President Nasheed had won the election by the majority vote of the Maldivian people. But even though he won the election, we did not see the implementation the principles I have just mentioned. We all saw that jobs were given to whoever they willed, did things in whatever way they wanted, exercised political influence in everything, and saw that things were happening whatever way they wished. We also criticized these things back then,” Thasmeen said.
He said that DRP tries to maintain the principles that the people had accepted in 2008. He said that DRP does not want things to fall into chaos, and went on to say that DRP will support equal treatment for all even if it is a process that is being carried out through the criminal justice system.
Thasmeen praised Kaanal Nasheed last night, stating his admiration for Kaanal’s political experience, ideas, and his excellent oratory skills.
