UN Maldives website hacked

The United Nations in the Maldives website (www.un.org.mv) has been hacked today.

The Maldives branch of Anonymous (Anonymous Maldives) has claimed responsibility for the hacking.

The hackers posted a statement on the website stating that it was done as a means of conveying a message that the website’s security was low.

Even though the main page was hacked, the rest of the website was left untouched.

The Anonymous Maldives facebook page also states that the UN Maldives website has been hacked and calls to update the website's security.

Anonymous is a loosely associated international group who uses computers to hack into computer networks.

Described as “hactivists” by certain experts, the Anonymous group, which was founded in 2003, has hacked into a number of computer systems belonging to governments and other organizations.

The group strongly opposes Internet censorship and surveillance, and normally targets government institutions that they claim to withhold public or controversial information.

A number of people have been arrested around the world in relation to computer hacking incidents where Anonymous had taken responsibility.
