The President’s Office has said that the Members of Parliament representing MDP have presented a petition to President Mohamed Nasheed advising him that the current Judges of all courts with the exceptions of Supreme Court and High Court have no authority according to the Constitution. They also requested him to take the necessary steps to put an immediate end to the decisions and rulings issued by them.
An article published on the website of the President’s Office tonight refers to the petition and says that the orders and rulings issued by Judges of lower courts should not be implemented in the country.
The President’s Office further said that ever since President Nasheed assumed his post as President, opposition groups have strived to obstruct the government from providing services to the public, and that members of the Judicial Service Commission have tried to establish a judicial dictatorship in the country.
In addition, they referred to Article 115 of the Constitution and said that it is the President’s responsibility to encourage State institutions and the public to keep their actions within the limits of the Constitution, and that even laws passed by the Parliament can only be implemented in the country following ratification by the President.
